NXNE is looking for panel discussions and presentations that will provide a rich and valuable experience for attendees. The topics can cross a multitude of disciplines that intersect with Interactive at some point. We’ve intentionally left out a “categories” field on the submission form because we don’t want to box in your imaginations. Read through the following points and then go ahead and send us your panel and/or presentation ideas for NXNE Interactive.

NXNEi 2012 will take place in Toronto, from June 13-16th at the Hyatt Regency on King St.

All submissions must be in by midnight November 11th.

By submitting a proposal you are not guaranteed acceptance and even after
NXNE accepts a proposal and they maintain the right to cancel it at any time.

NXNEi generally does not offer honorariums or cover travel costs for
presentation/panel submissions. If accepted all people involved in the
presentation will receive conference badges and music festival passes.

If you submit a panel idea, NXNE expects that you will be able to commit
the time necessary to help organize the panel, including finding panelists
and moderators.

NXNE will review and possibly suggest some panelists regardless of the
panelists you put on your panel submissions.

Please read the FAQ before submitting.

The Centre for Creative Communications, Centennial College, is seeking innovative and forward-thinking proposals from Canadian media, interactive, creative, technology, business and social entrepreneurs for the next wave of children’s media and multi-platform projects to qualify for $50K federal development grants. The new kidsmediacentre, an industry and creative content think tank at Centennial College, will hold an Information Session to interested developers, on Thursday, Feb 24 at 5:30 p.m., at The Centre for Creative Communications, located at 951 Carlaw Avenue, Toronto.

Centennial College’s Applied Research and Innovation Centre (ARIC) has received ten $50K Federal Development grants, some of which are available to help small and medium enterprises in the kids’ technology industry launch the next big idea in children’s media. The grants are part of a coordinated strategy between the federal government and colleges to accelerate innovation and productivity in southern Ontario asking business partners to collaborate on projects and work “hands-on” with College faculty and students in developing new and innovative technologies and services. Businesses are asked to contribute at least $25K towards a project in cash and/or in-kind.

TORONTO FREE BROADCASTING
Season 1: Call for Instructional Videos

“How to make a revolution in your kitchen.”

This fall, a learning channel and production studio will occupy the Toronto Free Gallery. For its first season, Toronto Free Broadcasting (TFB) makes this call for instructional videos on ways you navigate your environment to yield (or envision) ways to move in-between, and across boundaries separating “home,” “school,” “work” and “public space.” Season 1 submissions will be accepted from July 29th – August 31st, 2009, and made viewable at torontofreebroadcasting.ne

t . The ongoing archive of instructional videos forms one part of Toronto Free Broadcasting which also includes a series of live “educational programs” by artists and instructional video-making workshop nights held at the Gallery this September and October.

Videos should be between 1 to 10 minutes, documenting your practical skills, tactics, and knowledges –or those of someone you know– in forms such as “instructions,” “how-to’s,” “lessons,” “plans,” and “demonstrations.” Lessons might range from navigating the quickest route from point A to point B (fence-hopping techniques), to a step-by-step on negotiation tactics (dancing the tango with three), etc. These are some examples of knowledges which may not have use in predetermined day-to-day surroundings, though are useful in their personal, provisional and speculative grappling with the built environment. We love to see skills created, applied to situations particular to you, or which engage in the productive misuse of objects and spaces.

By cultivating a production site and channel for self-learning and teaching, we aim to facilitate conversations about the possibilities of an experimental community space.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Submissions of art works for both festivals participate in the transmediale Award 2010 while theoretical abstracts, papers and research oriented positions are invited for the Vilem Flusser Theory Award, with prizes totaling 10.000 EURO.

transmediale presents and pursues the advancement of artistic positions reflecting on the socio-cultural, political and creative impact of new technologies, network practices and digital innovation. As a festival aiming to define the contours of contemporary digital culture, it seeks out artistic practices that not only respond to scientific or technical developments, but that shape the way in which we think about and experience the technologies which impact virtually all aspects of our daily lives. As such, transmediale understands media technologies as cultural and aesthetic techniques that need to be embraced in order to comprehend, critique, and shape global societies.

CTM (club transmediale) is dedicated to contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music and sound creation, as well as the diverse range of artistic activities and social practises that develop within and connect to those audio cultures. Thus, the festival reflects on the agency of contemporary sound creation within the cultural fabric of society and its technological and social transformations. It explores the intersections of contemporary music and audio art with other artistic forms and cultural fields. A special emphasis is put on the creative use of new technologies, the interplay of sound with other media formats, the situational potential of live performances, the formation of social networks, and the advancement of a positive form of globalization.

Previous transmediale Award winners have included renowned artists such as Herman Asselberghs, Shilpa Gupta, Harwood/Wright/Yokokoji, Zhou Hongxiang, Istvan Kantor, Thomas Koener, Julia Meltzer/David Thorne, Agnes Meyer-Brandis, Netochka Nezvanova, schoenerwissen, ubermorgen.com, Adrian Ward, Herwig Weiser and 242.pilots. The Vilem Flusser Theory Award, in collaboration with the _Vilem_Flusser_Archive of the University of Arts (UdK) Berlin, has been awarded to Simon Yuill (2008), Denis Rojo aka jaromil and Brian Holmes (2009).

Jury of the transmediale Award 2010 are Michelle Kasprzak (Edinburgh), José Luis de Vicente (Barcelona), Li Zhenhua (Beijing/Zurich), Yves Bernard (Brussels), Doreen Mende (Berlin).

CODE Live Bridging Art, Music, Performance and the Audience in a Digital World

Invitation for applications This notice is an invitation for Canadian artists and arts organizations to submit applications to CODE Live , a 17 day event during the 2010 Cultural Olympiad that will engage audiences with eye-catching and inspiring interactive digital media in music, the visual and performing arts. The exhibitions and performances will showcase leading-edge works from local, national and international artists.

As part of its programming, CODE Live is interested in existing works from emerging artists, works that are interactive and reflect the theme of : Bridging.

(Please see below) The recommended budget range for submitted applications is $2 to $10,000 CAD.

CODE Live is a premiere event of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad and will be the finale for CODE, the Cultural Olympiad Digital Edition. CODE is a suite of programs designed so people can connect, create and collaborate in the digital space leading up to and during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. CODE launches in early May 2009 at vancouver2010.com/code.

Theme of CODE Live : Bridging Art often reflects life: the times we live in, the changes to our world, the trends and the values people hold on to. Using the theme of Bridging, CODE Live will explore how we experience technology, our planet, its ecology and the people living within it. As the world becomes more closely intertwined, so too does the art world. People are creating bridges not only in reality, but in the virtual world as well. Technology has altered how the Earth is seen, from both a cultural and ecological perspective. Works of art selected for CODE Live will explore how people interact with art, how they physically respond to a piece or how it challenges them to become part of the piece and the greater process. In today’s art world we see how interdisciplinary works crossing mediums are creating new messages for their audiences. Bridging aims to reflect this world, looking at these messages through the multiplicity of disciplines that have merged with new technologies. Submissions regarding the above artistic forms and the festival theme are encouraged. APPLICATION DEADLINE: all submissions must be received by May 31, 2009.

Women in Film Festival in Vancouver seeks interactive projects for their New Media Day on March 4th, 2009.

The women in film festival is a four day event that showcases national and international female projects in screen based media. The first day of the festival is dedicated to new media production and its a full day of panels discussions, networking events, pitches of new applications, and best of all- a new media exhibit that would transform vancity theatre into a great interactive space. This day would bring together content creators, visual artists and technology groups, and encourage discussions about new forms of interactivity and storytelling.

I am looking for projects that push the boundaries of traditional story telling and use interactive methods to engage the audience in the piece. Anything from an art installation, non linear films to mobile games and interactive performances. We are presenting projects from the digital media centre, Vancouver art galleries, mobile groups, national and international companies.

Selected artists will receive 2 festival passes with access to all the film screening, galas, panels and network events. They would also have a great opportunity to present their work to key personals in the new media industry in Canada. Out of town artists can also receive assistance in accommodation and travel expenses during their stay.

If interested please send a link to your work with a short synopsis and what equipment would you need to present it at the theatre. For more information about women in film and the festival program please visit:

Hello, friends, past winners and applicants —

The deadline for the Knight News Challenge is fast approaching! This year’s contest, giving away $5 million to digital news innovators, closes to all applications at midnight on November 1st.

Remember that we’re looking for innovative ideas that use digital experiments to transform community news and information exchange. Ideas should push the edge, whether that involves bringing Web 2.0 tools to local neighborhoods, improving online news or creating publishing platforms to inspire conversations in specific geographic communities.

There are only four rules. Winning entries must:

1. Use or create digital, open-source technology;
2. Use news and information to serve the public interest;
3. Benefit at least one specific geographic community;
4. Be innovative.

Last year’s winners received prizes ranging from $15,000 to $876,000. They included individuals, philanthropic organizations and for-profit businesses, such as The Bakersfield Californian newspaper. Ten winners were from the United States, and six were from Canada, England, Lithuania, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Russia.

To apply, visit www.newschallenge.org today.

There are two paths to the mountains:

a/ You may register as INDEPENDENT ARTISTS; the tuition is $600 and is worth it if you have it. There are many people to meet and a fine time to be had, replete with fun, learning, and the occasional wild elk or wooly mountain goat.

b/ If you have a new media project that fits within the thematic lines of the event and that you wish to further develop, you can apply for the INTENSIVE SCHOLARSHIP program. At least 10 scholarships are available. They support 50% of travel fees and 100% of tuition, room, meals, and mentorship costs. The projects will be adjudicated by a committee and participants will be invited to come to the event a day in advance and to stay on a day extra to have focussed time with Peer Advisors.
